Beginner Plant Care: 3 Easy Tips for Keeping Your Houseplants Happy
Caring for houseplants doesn’t have to be overwhelming. These three beginner-friendly tips apply to almost any plant and form the foundation for healthy, happy greenery at home.
1. Water when the soil is dry (not on a schedule)
Overwatering is the fastest way to lose a plant. Instead of sticking to a routine, check the soil first. Stick your finger about an inch deep—if it’s dry, water thoroughly. If it’s still damp, wait a few more days. Most houseplants like to dry out a bit between waterings.
2. Start with the right light
Most popular indoor plants thrive in bright, indirect sunlight. Place them near a window with filtered light—not in direct sun. If your plant is stretching, leaning, or fading in color, it may be asking for more light.
3. Use a grower pot inside a decorative pot
The best way to protect your plants from root rot? Keep them in their original plastic grower pots (with drainage holes) and place those inside decorative pots. This setup lets you lift the plant out, water thoroughly, and drain any excess—without letting moisture sit at the bottom and cause damage.
